For the Singers

So you can sing then?

What type of singer are you?

It's a serious question as you will need to taylor your career towards the individual job you wish to fill. Singing is arguably the most competitive category, especially for singer acts who tour the ships, doing similar material.

To get the ratings from the passengers you will have to sing the most popular songs within the genre that you are hired to fulfill. Your audience doesn't want an education. They like what they know and love. Above that it's your job to make them like you.

Before I put you off;

Ships always have and always will need singers:

  1. They need singers as part of a production team. Some ability to dance will be required.
  2. They need a singer as part of a nightclub band that performs every night
  3. They need singers to perform big band standards for strict tempo dancing
  4. All ships hire singers as acts because passengers expect it as part of the cruise experience.
  5. Some ships hire opera singers as part of a classical programme

  • Greg's tip: I can't emphasise enough how important it is to think about the effect your act will have on certain demographics of the audience. I will always remember a tall blonde singer with a big voice and a top heavy hour glass figure who sang once as a one off act. After the show the cruise director received numerous complaints about the volume. The cruise director complained to the sound man who was stunned about the complaints as the sound was actually quite low. It turned out all the complaints came from ladies in their 70s. It was obvious to me that reason for the compaints was actually because the lady in question was wearing a low cut dress, and was flaunting her assets. She had a figure that most women would die for. Women in their 70s don't look like that and probably never did so why should they be reminded? Needless to say the act never returned. This was sad as the girl hasd everything else right and had gone to a lot off time and expense to master her craft. This was something that could have been avoided so easily.

So how are you going to know who can actually get you on board?

There's a lot of unscruplous so called agents out there who claim they can get you that job. In most cases it's over before the fat lady sings.

I won't pretend to be an agent or offer you a job, but I can give you the contacts who actually book singers of different kinds on board and production companies that actually hire for ships. I won't guarantee you success or take a commission if you do land a job. What I will say is that you definitely won't land a singing career at sea unless you apply to the company hiring for the ship you want to work on. Few ships hire directly for these positions.
